A book by Paul Dix of Pivotal Education (www.pivotaleducation.com)
Created 21st January 2019
A number of years ago, Paul Dix came to my place of work to conduct a staff training. A ‘notorious teacher-wrangler’ (Pivotal Education, 2017: synopsis), the MAC (or hall) was full of teachers and support staff. Behaviour management is a phrase all teachers have a deep interest in. Whether there for strategies, at ‘wits end’ or because they were told to be there, not one person moved for 3 hours.
The training has remained with me in my teaching practice and many of the techniques have helped me in classroom situations since then. My research is centred around the work of Paul Dix/Pivotal Education and applying it to a regular lesson with a particular group of learners. The group were in my cohort in 2017-2018 and although feisty and complex, did not display the levels of disruption and hostility of today. My research is centred on whether behaviour can be altered, creating a positive class community using a specific technique(s).
Next steps: Formulation of potential research proposal/literature review/observation of target group (permission from colleague).
